Amy Sandys-Lumsdaine

An Artist & Print Maker based in Nairobi

Amy Sandys-Lumsdaine is a wildlife and landscape artist and printmaker based in Nairobi, Kenya, where she has lived and worked for more than 29 years. Her artwork is inspired by her travels and life across Africa, particularly the diverse natural environments and cultures of Kenya. She focuses on wildlife, still life, landscapes, and figurative painting, and is known for blending traditional craft elements with fine art techniques.

Born in Calcutta, India, into a family of tea merchants, Amy was educated at Downe House in the UK and trained in textile design at Middlesex University and UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology), earning both a BSc (Hons) and an MSc in Textile Design, Design Management & Technology. She initially worked in the fashion industry in Bond Street, London, before moving to Kenya in 1997 to pursue art full-time.

Her move to Kenya profoundly shaped her creative work. She and her husband frequently fly around the country in their light aircraft, allowing her to sketch and photograph wildlife and landscapes from unique perspectives, later developing these studies into oil paintings in her Nairobi rooftop studio. Her art reflects a fusion of African, Arabic, European, and Asian influences, often featuring motifs inspired by Swahili architecture, tribal crafts, jewellery, and textiles, which she sometimes integrates into the frames or surfaces of her pieces. Drawing on her background in textile design Amy assimilates patterns and repeats which she hand carves into blocks and prints onto canvas and frames, embracing the mishaps and uniqueness of every stamp. The patterns and repeats are also inspired by Nature and her connection to the natural world.  The imagined patterns are a tribute to biodiversity and regrowth.

Beyond her studio work, Amy is an active member of Seedballs Kenya, a pioneering environmental reforestation initiative that makes and distributes seedballs throughout Kenya to restore degraded ecosystems. The project has been featured on the BBC and in Sir David Attenborough’s series The Green Planet.
